Doges, stars and views over the lagoon: the Danieli reopens as a Four Seasons, with reimagined suites.

From the Dandolo Palace to Hotel Danieli

It all begins with the Dandolo, a patrician dynasty that gave Venice four doges. The most celebrated, Enrico Dandolo, was elected at the age of 85, already blind, and went on to lead the Fourth Crusade all the way to Constantinople. His portrait still watches over the grand staircase. In 1822, Giuseppe Dal Niel, a Friulian merchant who could neither read nor write, leased the piano nobile of the palace to accommodate travellers. The Venetians nicknamed him "Danieli," and the name endured. The venture proved so successful that he purchased the entire palace two years later. The hotel subsequently expanded with the Casa Nuova, the former Treasury of the Republic, and later with the Danieli Excelsior, built in the 1940s. Footbridges now connect all three buildings.

Legendary love affairs and cinema stars: why the Danieli is so celebrated

In 1834, George Sand and Alfred de Musset took up residence in room 10, overlooking the lagoon. The idyll came to an abrupt end when the novelist fell for the physician who had come to treat her. In 1959, Maria Callas and Aristotle Onassis experienced their own coup de foudre within these walls. Richard Wagner, for his part, found inspiration here for Tristan und Isolde. Then cinema claimed the hotel for its own: Moonraker with Roger Moore as James Bond, Le Guignolo with Jean-Paul Belmondo, The Tourist with Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp. Charlie Chaplin, Walt Disney, Grace Kelly, Paul Newman and Anthony Hopkins have all signed the guest book. To toast their memory, head to Bar Dandolo for its Vesper Martini, the signature cocktail of 007.

A renovation by Pierre-Yves Rochon

The Statuto family, owners of the property, entrusted the renaissance of the Danieli to Pierre-Yves Rochon. The French interior designer, known as "the man of 100 hotels," has already left his mark on the George V in Paris and the Four Seasons in Rome and Florence. His brief: to refresh without betraying. Every room and bathroom has been entirely redesigned, and several rooms have been combined to create new suites. The palette draws its inspiration from the lagoon: celadon green, soft blues, terracotta and powdered rose. The gilded ceiling of the lobby has regained its lustre, while Murano glass, terrazzo and Rubelli fabrics pay tribute to Venetian craftsmen.

The suites at Danieli: the complete guide

The Danieli has reopened with 120 rooms and suites, and will offer 168 by 2027, once the Excelsior wing has been restored.

The suite offering comprises nine categories, ranging from 39 to 148 square metres, distributed between the Palazzo Dandolo and the Palazzo Casa Nuova. Only the presidential suite has been entirely reimagined in a contemporary style. The historic suites, including the Doge Suite, have been faithfully restored to their original character.

One or two-bedroom suite: how many guests?

All suites at the Danieli feature a king-size bedroom, a separate living room and a marble bathroom. They accommodate up to three adults, or two adults and one child, thanks to a sofa bed or an extra bed. They are ideal for a couple, with or without a child. For families or groups of friends, most suites can be connected to an adjoining room to become two-bedroom suites. The Signature suites go even further, available in configurations ranging from two to six bedrooms.

The courtyard-facing suites: the understated charm of Venice

The Premier Suite (39 to 56 sq m) is the gateway into the world of suites. It features a living room with a table for two, a dressing room and a white marble bathroom. It overlooks neighbouring palaces and narrow alleyways, offering less of a panorama and more intimacy.

The Grand Dandolo Suite (55 to 75 sq m), housed in the historic palazzo, has all the qualities of a private Venetian residence, complete with a true living and dining room. It also looks out onto the alleyways and can be connected to a Signature suite to gather an entire party under one roof.

The lagoon-view suites. This is the view that built the Danieli's legend.

The Dandolo Suite (52 to 54 sq m), at the heart of Palazzo Dandolo, offers a partial view of the lagoon and a generous living room for entertaining.

The Premium Lagoon-View Suite (48 to 58 sq m) opens fully onto the water, set within a classic Venetian interior.

The Grand Lagoon-View Suite (59 to 71 sq m) adds a glimpse of the Grand Canal to the sweeping panorama.

Finally, the Four Seasons Lagoon-View Suite (80 to 81 sq m), located in the Casa Nuova, occupies a corner of the building: two windows frame the lagoon and flood the living room with light. All of these suites can be extended with a connecting room.

The exceptional suites

The three Signature suites (82 to 101 sq m) occupy the piano nobile floors of Palazzo Dandolo, where the ceilings soar at their highest. Each has its own distinct decor, inspired by legends of cinema, opera and fashion, featuring antique furnishings, two small balconies and a panoramic view over the lagoon.

On the fourth and final floor, the presidential suite (133 sq m) is the only entirely contemporary one. It offers a view of the lagoon and the island of San Giorgio, a table for six, and a bathroom lined with windows. And crowning it all: the royal Doge Dandolo suite (148 sq m). Set at the corner of the first piano nobile, it embraces the lagoon at 180° from three small balconies. Inside, period furniture, an 18th-century fresco by Jacopo Guarana on the bedroom ceiling, and a bathroom with a sunken bathtub and hammam. It can also be configured as a two-bedroom suite.

How much does a suite at the Danieli cost?

The lagoon view comes at a price:

Expect to pay around €1,600 more per night between the Grand Dandolo Suite and the first waterfront suite. Season also affects the bill: the same suite costs approximately €440 more per night in April than in November. The non-refundable rate saves around 20% compared to the flexible rate.

For a third adult, budget approximately €170 more per night. Breakfast is an additional charge (€65). Rates are "from" prices, per night, for two adults, taxes and fees included, subject to dates and availability, as observed on LaSuite.com via Booking in September 2026.

Good to know: breakfast above the lagoon

The true luxury of the Danieli is best savored on the rooftop. At the Terrazza Danieli, breakfast is served to the sound of Saint Mark's bells, overlooking the basin and the island of San Giorgio. Chef Adriano Rausa crafts an Italian cuisine with Venetian accents. He pairs it with a rarity, the Harmonia Mundi, the wine from the only intra-muros vineyard in Venice, whose first bottle of each harvest is reserved for the Pope. A spa with sauna and hammam is set to open before the end of 2026.

Conclusion:

Two centuries after Giuseppe Dal Niel's wager, the Danieli remains a cinematic setting where every night feels like a premiere. Ready to choose your suite overlooking the lagoon?
